     Ocimum basilicum L.                                                     On soaking in water, the seed’s outer pericarp swells


                                                                                  into a gelatinous mass called hydrogel.


                                                                             Consisting of 43.9% of carbohydrate


                                                                             An acidic polysaccharide which its uronic acid value is

                                                                                  6.51%.


                                                                             It  composed  of  D-glucose,  D-galactose,  Dmannose,  L-


                                                                                  arabinose,  D-xylose  and  L-rhamnose,  along  with  D-

                                                                                  galacturonic and D-mannuronic acids.


                                                                             Used as a disintegrant in the tablet formulations


                                                                             Suitable  alternative  as  suspending  agent  in

                                                                                  pharmaceutical suspensions


                                                                             Inhibitory activity  for protein  tyrosine  phosphatase  1B


                                                                                  may lead to  anti-diabetic activity.
