Nerot – Lighting the Candles Step: 1
“The people
who walked in
darkness
have seen a
great Light...”
(Isa. 9:2).
Leader: We begin the Seder with the light and warmth of the Passover holiday Since the Jewish
candles. The (eldest) woman of the house traditionally lights the candles no later day begins at
sundown, the
than 18 minutes before sundown on Nisan 14 (i.e., on Erev Pesach). After kindling candles are lit to
the candles, she waives her hands over the flames three times (as if welcoming in mark the arrival
of Passover...
the holiday), and covering her eyes with her hands recites the customary blessing:
The woman says:
“We strike the match,
but God brings forth
the light...”
Barukh attah Adonai, Eloheinu melekh ha’olam,
asher kideshanu be’mitzvotav ve’tzivanu le’hadlik

if our Seder “Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, Master of the universe,
occurs during the yotzer ha’meorot:
weekly Sabbath... who sanctifies us with Thy commandments, and commanded us “Praised are you,
to kindle the light (of Shabbat and of) the holiday.” Lord, creator
of the lights…”
