5. Balaputradeva Museum
The Balaputra Dewa Museum is one of the so-called Indonesian
State Museums, which represent each province in Indonesia.
Construction of the museum began in 1978, and the building was
inaugurated on November 5, 1984. The decision for the name
"Balaputra Dewa" was based on the 9th-century Indian sovereign
Balaputra, recorded in an inscription found in Nalanda, India. The
Nalanda inscription mentions his connection with building a
Buddhist monastery under his sponsorship. Both names are
mentioned as being found in inscriptions in Java in the 9th century
AD, relating his defeat in Java to Rakai Pikatan, a ruler from the
Sanjaya dynasty, who was asked by Balaputra to leave Java to
settle in what is now the city of Palembang, South Sumatra.
