A Think about the context.
The meaning of a word or a phrase varies depending on the situation where it is used.
Therefore, consider what the passage talks about and what happens in the passage.
e.g. I’m not in the mood for company.
“Company” has a meaning of “firm,” but it means “accompanying someone” in this context.
B Find the clues hidden in the passage.
• Definition and restatement clues
e.g. US towns spend millions of dollars to repair potholes, those deep holes in the road.
• Synonym and antonym clues
e.g. The scientist could transform, or change, water into gasoline.
• Example clues
e.g. Natural catastrophes such as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes are causing serious
damage around the world.
• Word part (prefix, stem or suffix) clues
e.g. From the words “prepare,” “prevent,” and “preview,” we can predict that “pre” means
“before.”
