When answering this type of question, check to see if the reference words include any
features of:
• persons or objects
• gender (male, female, or neutral)
• singular or plural

B Remember referents can be located anywhere.
Referents are the words that references refer to. Check the surroundings of the reference
words. Referents can be close, far, before, or behind the reference words.
e.g. In his closet, Calvin found the diary he used to keep.
C Note the reference words may refer to parts of a sentence or a whole sentence.
e.g. You eat greasy food too much. That’s why you are so fat.
D Double-check to see if the sentence still makes sense.
