1 There are many famous women in American history.

But one of ⇡ never really lived! Her
name was “Mrs. Dogood.” Benjamin Franklin, the
famous printer and writer, invented Mrs. Dogood for a

newspaper. “Mrs. Dogood” wrote funny letters to the
newspaper. In ⇢ she talked about many
things. She talked about families, neighbors, and schools. Her letters were fun.
People liked them. No one knew that “Mrs. Dogood” was really Mr. Franklin.
Fifteen letters from “Mrs. Dogood” were printed. So, one famous lady in U.S.
history did not really exist. But people loved “Mrs. Dogood” anyway.
2 Everybody eats tomatoes. We eat them raw in salads. We eat them cooked
in soups. We eat them in pizzas and spaghetti sauce. We drink tomato juice.

But about 150 years ago, people were scared of tomatoes. ⇡
⇢
thought tomatoes were poison! In fact, tomatoes were safe to eat. One man
decided to prove it! ⇢ sat down and ate a whole basket of
tomatoes. People expected him to die! But nothing happened.
⇣
He lived! The tomatoes did not hurt him. ⇣
really tasted good. Then everyone knew tomatoes were safe to
eat. And we eat lots of them now. Did you eat tomatoes today?
