The Beauty of Butterfl y Wings

Butterflies have beautiful wings! They have bright colors. They can be just about any
color – red, orange, green, white, yellow, or whatever. Butterfly wings also have many

patterns. Some have stripes. Others have spots.

Look closely at a butterfly wing. It is very thin. It weighs almost nothing! But it is
5 • still strong enough to fly. It gets its color from tiny “scales*.” These are like scales
on fish, only smaller. Each scale has a single color. It also has tiny “windows” on its

surface. These “windows” catch light, and so the wings shine in the sunlight. Not only
people watch butterfly wings for their colors. Birds watch them too! Why? Birds know
butterflies with bright red or orange wings are bad to eat! They make birds sick. So,
                     10 • birds avoid them!
