                                                       Kangaroo Overboard!

n the 1930s, the world’s most famous battleship was Britain’s Hood. It had hundreds of
Imen ... and a few animals, too! Like many other ships, the Hood had cats. The Hood’s

cats were Ginger and Fishcakes. Ginger was very big. Rats did not want to meet Ginger!

But the Hood’s strangest animal was a kangaroo. His name was Joey. He was a gift from

5 • the people of Australia. Joey was a nice kangaroo. But sometimes he made trouble. He ate
cigarettes and even fell overboard*! At last, he went to live in a zoo.

The ship also had a red macaw bird. Its name was Scarlet. But it didn’t stay there for long.

Scarlet got put off the ship quickly! The bird became someone’s pet in Canada.

The Hood also had several dogs. One was Bill, the Hood’s white bull terrier. Bill “retired”
10 • in 1941 and went to live on shore. Later that year, the German battleship Bismarck sank the

Hood. The great ship is gone. But people still remember the Hood and its men – and even
                          its kangaroo!

overboard: adv. off a boat or a ship and into the water
