Science Fiction

Do you read stories about spaceships* and time travel? Then you read science fiction.
It has a long history. People wrote science fiction hundreds of years ago. But science

fiction became very popular in the last 100 years.

People like to read about trips to other planets like Mars. Many science fiction stories
5 • become movies and television shows. Science fiction writers try to guess what the
future is like. But science fiction is also about the present. In fact*, many stories take

place* right now! Not all science fiction is about space, either. Some stories take place
here on Earth.

But no matter where and when* they take place, the stories tell us a lot. They tell us
10 • about science and about ourselves! Maybe people in a story are spacemen* or time

travelers. But aren’t they really people like us – here and now?
