                                                      Introduction

The education of youth is facing tremendous changes as educators work to adapt and evolve with the
new challenges of the twenty-first century. These changes are necessitated by a variety of
circumstances, but the primary catalysts are the evolution of technology and the changing career and
workforce dynamics within the United States and the world. It is imperative for educators to adopt
educational models that are adaptive and
capable of meeting these new demands. Yet it is
also time that the model for educating the
nation’s youth embraces the need for mastery

and the moral imperative to approach all
               children as capable of learning.

The Orbis Learner Community (OLC) is one such
attempt to provide a learner-centric approach to
education. A model that builds on a learner’s
interest and learning style, while approaching
the necessary subject-area mastery. A model that is not constrained by time, schedules, or methods but
rather allows all students to optimize their learning based on personal interests and needs.

The focus of the Orbis Learner Community is the learner; the outcome is learning; and the process is
personalized. A model of learning that is designed to fit the individual learner while accomplishing the
expected learning goals. The OLC is an innovative
college-preparatory model designed to meet the
needs of learners who do not thrive in a traditional
school format, those who need a more flexible

schedule to accomplish other life goals such as
intensive sports training or travel, or in
environments where the limited number of
learners does not support a high quality traditional
school model. OLC is a model designed to satisfy all
                                                              regulatory concerns around compulsory education,
accredited transcripts, or college admissions. However, with the OLC approach, learning is accomplished
quite differently than in traditional schools.
