Lowenstein Jensen media
• Composition: It is egg media contains glycerin,
potato starch, asparagine and malachite green
• Color: opaque green media
• Uses: for cultivation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Note: Lowenstein Jensen media is enriched &selective media
3. 3. Selective media
This media shows the growth of selective; microbes or desired microorganisms and
inhibits the growth of unwanted microbes. The inhibition occurs by adding bile salts,
antibiotics, dyes, PH adjustments.
Examples: Lowenstein Jensen media
4. 4. Differential media or indicator media
• It distinguishes one microorganism type from another growing on the same media.
• This type of media uses the biochemical characteristics of a microorganism growing
in the presence of specific nutrients or indicators (such as neutral red, phenol red, or
methylene blue) added to the medium to visibly indicate the defining characteristics
of a microorganism
Examples: MacConkey’s media- Simmon’ citrate media- christensen’s urea medium
MacConkey’s media
This media contains lactose and acid indicator
