Having failed to get access to the US-made Tomahawk cruise missile, France will
develop and deploy a ship-launched, long-range attack cruise missile near the end
of the decade, according to European industrialists The French Navy wants an
extended range derivative of the SCALP EC/Storm shadow air-launched missile, now
in development for the French Air Force and British Air Force. The ship-launched
derivative of the missile is intended to equip both NATO’s next generation of frigate
and its current Barracuda project, a nuclear-powered attack submarine program.
France intends to purchase 17 next generation frigates. They will be fitted with a
variant of the silver-launcher, a vertical launch system initially designed for naval
surface-to-air missile systems.
