Hospital Medicine Pathway
Pathway activities include:
Flexibility to enter the pathway at the start of PGY-3 or PGY-4 year
• Mentorship with an academic hospitalist from the first day of entering the pathway
• High-yield, hospital-medicine focused didactics
• 4-week “Junior Hospitalist” block during PGY-4 year
• 2-week “Professional Development” block during PGY-4 year
o Includes unique clinical experiences including experiences in:
▪ Additional ultrasound training
▪ interventional radiology
▪ radiation oncology
▪ speech therapy, physical/occupational therapy
▪ SNF/LTAC field trip
▪ And more!
• Weekly ultrasound rounds
• Opportunity to attend monthly hospital medicine grand rounds
• Participate in and present at Hospital Medicine journal club
• Unique subspecialty rotations: 2 weeks of Neuro stroke and 2 weeks of Neuro critical care
• Paid SHM membership and annual conference attendance
Pathway residents rotate together on a
4-week “Junior Hospitalist” block
at Jacobs. Residents rotate at Jacobs
Medical Center wards for 2 weeks, 1
week on Jacobs Consult, and 1 week
on Team 5 (palliative care). During the
4-week block, there are twice-weekly
hospital-medicine focused didactics on
topics including patient safety,
billing/coding, business of hospital
medicine, oncologic emergencies, and
perioperative medicine. The “Junior
Hospitalist” block also includes hands-
on, weekly point-of-care ultrasound
bedside scanning to further develop
each resident’s ultrasound skills.
