DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

WAYS TO BE INVOLVED AT UCSD

“UCSD GME, the internal medicine and pediatrics programs each have their own initiatives
focusing on advancing healthy equity, advocacy, and diversity, creating a wealth of support and

opportunities for residents to get involved. These initiatives are a new and growing commitment

and although we still have a lot of work to do, I am so proud of the institution, faculty, and
residents who are committed to this cause. Med-Peds residents also have a unique ability to

collaborate with multiple departments to effect change in institutional policy.”

                                           EDUCATION (GME) LEVEL

UCSD GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (GME) EDI COMMITTEE

The UCSD GME Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee represents an institutional
commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse trainees and faculty across all programs. This
committee also focuses on enhancing networking among diverse faculty and trainees
throughout the institution. In addition, the committee sponsors justice, equity, diversity, and
inclusion (JEDI) open houses for residency applicants to learn more about the EDI efforts within
UCSD. Local mentorship and attendance at national and regional conferences for students
from diverse backgrounds (e.g. SNMA, LMSA, LGBTQPHAM, APAMSA) is a priority. The UCSD
GME office also provides education to faculty and program directors throughout the institution,
including holistic review of residency applications and implicit bias training in regards to
evaluations. Lastly, at the institutional level, a new position was established for a Chief
Administrative Officer for Health EDI. This has created a “C-suite” partner with whom residency
programs and the Office of GME can work to achieve DEI goals that are aligned with our health
system. It is also a path towards assuring that our hiring practices promote diversity and
inclusion across our departments and divisions.
