Sensitivity Training
Sensitivity training, helping to put people in another’s shoes, always goes a long way.
Sensitivity Exercise
Ask each staff member what they love to do when they can do anything they wish and how it gives meaning to their lives. Notice how their answers differ. Point out that what we do with our time is different for each of us, which shows how we assign meaning to our time. Note: this can be done as a community learning circle – be sure to have staff as well as residents answer the question. Open for serious discussion about how we honor life’s meaning and purpose in the household.
Real life stories also help us see the importance of activities. We’ve heard residents say, “We’re not living; we’re existing.” We MUST find what gives each person in our house meaning and purpose; it is our obligation. Willingly share stories about meaning and purpose in our lives and actively seek them from each other – they build energy and interest. Best friends know each other’s stories.
Community Learning Circle Question
How would it feel not to be able to do the things you love most to do?
