Unit (1) – Phonics

                                                  Syllables

                                                Parent’s Guide

                    A syllable is a word part with one vowel sound. Some

              words have more than one syllable. When syllables end in a

              vowel and have a long vowel sound, they are called

               “open syllables”.

                                                 The Tiger Rule

                     How do you know where to split the word/syllable?

               When a word has one consonant between the vowels and the

              first vowel has a long sound, split the word before the

              consonant.

              Example:

                             tiger = ti • ger                  open = o • pen

                                 Divide the following words into syllables.

              1)  paper          ______ • ______
