vival, and said that it was a so-called "law of nature" that the West
should win this fight and enslave the other races. In his The Origin of
Species, he wrote:
At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries,
the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and re-
place the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the
anthropomorphous (human-like) apes... will no doubt be extermi-
nated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be
wider, for it will intervene in a more civilised state, as we may
hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as baboon, in-
stead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla. 1
Darwin arrived at this interesting conclusion by means of a lie
about the struggle for survival. According to this claim, the weak are
eliminated in the fight for survival, and the strong and fit go on to sur-
vive. Moreover, he maintained that this was necessary for universal de-
velopment, in other words that the disappearance of some races was a
process that would allow man to progress and move forward.
This unscientific idea, known as "Social Darwinism," saw wide ac-
ceptance in the primitive scientific conditions of the time and came to
be the basic justification for European colonialism. In short, Darwinism
is the "scientific" foundation of colonialism.
Social Darwinism is as much the source of extreme nationalism
