It is no particular nation or society
that is the enemy of the Islamic
world, but rather "ideologies" that
have turned those nations and soci-
eties into oppressors. These ideolo-
gies came to dominate much of the
world in the nineteenth century,
and everywhere they prevailed be-
came scenes of cruelty and violence
in the twentieth.
