... [They] came up to Peter and John while they were speak-
ing to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the
apostles were teaching the people [the revelation of God] and

proclaiming... They seized Peter and John, and because it was
evening, they put them in jail until the next day. But many
who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew
to about five thousand. (Acts, 4:1-4)

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church
at Jerusalem... Saul began to destroy the church. Going from
house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them
in prison. Those who had been scattered preached the word
                 wherever they went. (Acts, 8:1-4)

The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the
magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. After they
had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and
the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. Upon re-
ceiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened
their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were
praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners
were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent
earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At
once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains
                 came loose. (Acts, 16:22-26)

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist... Now
Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in

prison... Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the
people, because they considered him a prophet. (Matthew, 14:1-
                 5)
