Alif, Lam, Mim. have been de feat ed in the low est land, but
aft er their de feat they will be vic to ri ous with in three to nine
years. The af fair is Allah's from be gin ning to end. On that
day, the be liev ers will re joice. (Surat al-Rum: 1-4)
The pa gan Persians de feat ed the Christian Byzantines in

613-14, and these vers es were sent down about sev en years lat -
er. However, at that time the Byzantines suf fered so many loss -
es that it was hard enough for them to sur vive, let alone be vic -
to ri ous. In 613, the Persians de feat ed them at Antioch and then
con quered Damascus, Cilicia, Tarsus, Armenia, and Jerusalem.
The loss of Jerusalem in 614 and the de struc tion of the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre were par tic u lar ly hard blows for the
Byzantines. 59
