               some of Constantinople's out skirts and, in or der to pay the ar -

               er adorn ments, as well as bronze stat ues, melt ed down to pro -
               duce new coins. Many gov ern ors re belled, and it came to the
               point where the em pire was about to be torn apart. The
               Persians in vad ed Byzantine-held Mesopotamia and went on to
               oc cu py Cilicia, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Armenia.  60

                    In short, ev ery one was wait ing for Byzantine Empire to
               col lapse. But at this very time, Surat al-Rum was re vealed and
               pro claimed that the Byzantines would be vic to ri ous be fore nine
               years had passed. The un be liev ers thought that this would nev -
               er hap pen. But it did, for in 622 Heraclius in vad ed Armenia
               and de feat ed the Persians in sev er al bat tles. In December 627,

               both sides fought a huge bat tle near the ru ins of Nineveh (fif ty

               kil o me tres east of the River Tigris). Here, the Byzantines de -
               feat ed the Persians and, some months lat er, forced them to sign
               a trea ty that re quired them to re store Byzantium's lost ter ri to ry
               to it. The Byzantine vic to ry was com plete when Jerusalem was

               re turned and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre once again
               came un der Christian con trol. 63  So, the vic to ry that Allah had
               re vealed and our Prophet (saas) had pro claimed oc curred mi -
               rac u lous ly, as Allah says in the verse, with in three to nine
               years.

                    These vers es are al so mi rac u lous be cause the facts of the
               ar ea's ge og ra phy could not have been known at that time. For
               ex am ple, Allah says in the third verse that the Byzantines were
               de feat ed at the low est re gion of Earth. This Arabic ex pres sion
               ad na al-ard is in ter pret ed as "a near by place" in many trans la -
