11. A solar eclipse:

Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) will not emerge unless the Sun rises as a sign.
(Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi 'Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Za-
man, p. 33.)

Along with the so lar ex plo sion men tioned above, the "sign" to ap -
pear on the Sun may well be the great so lar eclipse on August 11, 1999—
the last to tal so lar eclipse of the twen ti eth cen tu ry, and the first time that
so many peo ple had been able to watch and study an eclipse for so long.

12. The appearance of dusty, smoky fitnah:

... There will be a dusty and smoky fitnah like
patch es of dark night... (Sunan Abu Dawud)

The word fitnah (tribulation) implies war, incite-
ment, disorder, and conflict—anything that turns
peoples' reason and hearts away from the true
path. The fitnah mentioned in this hadith will
