14. Killing of the rulers of Damascus and Egypt:

In 1981, Anwar al-Sadat (President of Egypt since 1970) was as sas si nat -
ed dur ing a mil i tary re view. Other Egyptian lead ers who have been killed in -
clude the prime min is ters Boutros Ghali (1910), Prime Minister Ahmed Ma-
her Pasha (1945), and Mahmoud Nukrashy Pasha (1948).
The word Sham is not used on ly for Damascus, for it al so means "left"
and has long been used to re fer to those coun tries to the west of the Hijaz

(where the cit ies of Mecca and Madina lie). Many lead ers have been killed in
