The main knot in this hanging formation is a modified pan chang knot
60with a hollow center, i.e. a hui ling knot. It has sixteen spaces in which
to display different knotting skills. For variation, different color cords for each
space or each group of spaces can be used.
TYING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Use both cord ends and work from two different directions to make a hui ling
knot. See page 90, Fun with Chinese Knotting, for instructions.
2. Use different cords to tie the inner sides. On completion of the outer sides of
each hui ling knot, tie the inner side immediately to avoid a loose formation and
messiness. If you prefer not to tie in a separate cord in each space, you should
plan in advance to avoid excessive weaving of cord within the knot body.
This 3D hanging knot is made by developing side knots on the cord
61sections on all four sides of a button knot to make the knot formation
spread laterally and also to make the button knot body very tight.
TYING INSTRUCTIONS
1.Tie knots in the following order: a 3D button knot, a double connection knot
and a pan chang knot.
2.Then tie knots in this order: a double connection knot, a lingzhi knot on the
cord section surrounding each side of the button knot, and a double connection
knot.
3. Next tie a lingzhi knot on both sides of the hui ling knot.Tie a round brocade
knot within the hui ling knot. Then tie a double connection knot just below the
hui ling knot.
4.Tie a double connection knot below the 3D button knot.
5. Shellac the entire knot formation to make it shine and to stiffen it. Lastly, paint
the silhouetted cords on the knot formation with gold paint.
