Three-dimensional Type
The knotting process of a normal pan chang knot can be started in the center of the
knot body, so that when the finished knot is hung, it will make a 90 degrees turn.
Alternatively, some decorative side knots can be knotted on the cords in the knot
body to give it a more pronounced three-dimensional effect.
Changing the Knotting Sequence of Outer Loops
This applies to pan chang knots with overlapped and compound outer loops.

Modified Knot Bodies
Shifting the Weave of the Knot Body
Here, the vertical cord, upon reaching the center of the knot body, is bent 90 degrees
or 180 degrees to give a different structure to the knot body. The 90-degree change

knot (see page 51). gives rise to Type 1 and the 180-degree change to Type 2 pan chang knots. Because the
ear loops in the center of the knot body can be done in either the wrap one, pull one
or wrap two, pull two technique, slightly different pan chang knots are produced.
Reducing the Number of Cords
When a pan chang knot is tied using only three sides of ear loops, the weave and struc-
ture of the knot body as well as the shape of the outer loops are changed. The result-
ing knot looks more like a cloverleaf knot with two outer loops and shared ear loops
than a pan chang knot. However, since the knotting technique is that of the pan chang
knot, this type of modified knot is called a pan chang knot with reduced cords.

knot (see page 54).
Triangular Pan Chang Knot
The knotting technique of the pan chang knot is recommended for making triangu-
lar knots, for example, the san chai knot that is taught in Fun with Chinese Knottting.
A diagonal weave can also be used to tie triangular knots.
