Type 1(a) Shiftweave Pan Chang Knot
The horizontal cords in the body of a pan chang knot can be shifted 90 or 180 degrees
to produce a modified pan chang knot and a modified pan chang good luck knot.
This modified shiftweave pan chang knot has a 90-degree shift, with the central
weave formed using the pull one, wrap one technique. The arrangement of ear loops
is the same as for the normal pan chang knot.
TYING INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1. Fold and arrange ear loop 1 at a 90-degree angle. Step 2. Pull ear loop 2
through 1. Step 3. Pull ear loop 3 through 2, shift it 90 degrees and wrap around 1.
Step 4. Pull ear loop 4 through 2 and 3. Step 5. Wrap ear loop 5 around 1 and 2. Step
6.Wrap ear loop 6 around 3, shift it 90 degrees, pull through 1 and 3 and wrap around
5. Step 7. Pull ear loop 7 through ear loop 4 and wrap around 6 and 5. Step 8. Pull ear
loop 8 through 4, wrap around 1, shift it 90 degrees, pull through 6, wrap around 3,
pull through 1 and wrap around 7.
HINTS
• When tightening this knot, you can highlight the beauty of the central weave by
adjusting the weave density on all four sides as well as the center. If you want to
expand the knot, but at the same time preserve the shiftweave pattern in the center,
increase the number of ear loops on each side, but make sure the number of ear loops
is even.
• A pan chang knot with two outer loops on each side can be shifted as a group. If you
want to make a multiple group shift, the number of outer loops on each side must be
one plus the number of the group shift. For example, to do three group shifts, you
must have four outer loops on each side of the knot.
