Exercise 324. Read and discuss the facts.
- BMW was an aircraft engine manufacturer: Originally a manufacturer
of aircraft engines, BMW became a car manufacturer after Germany lost
World War I. The Versailles treaty made all airplane companies cease
production. The Versailles Treaty virtually crippled the German economy,
and was a major catalyst of the Second World War.
- Fanta was created in Nazi Germany: After the US established a trade
embargo against Nazi Germany, it became impossible for Coca-Cola
Deutschland to import the syrup required to manufacture their soft drink.
To counter this, the head of Coca-Cola Deutscland, Max Keith, decided to
concoct a completely new soft-drink from the materials available at
Germany, and came up with Fanta. He famously called it the “leftover of
leftovers.”

And this brings me (это ведёт меня к) to my next sign of a toxic manager.
And that is they are going to create (создать) obstacles for you, they are going
to get in the way (мешать) of the work that you do. And yes, they might be
using tools like micromanagement and unfair (несправедливая) criticism in
order to (для того, чтобы) create obstacles (создать препятствия) for you.
But they might be doing other more nuanced (детальные) things like refusing
to support (отказаться поддержать) the work that you do, or just refusing
you to give you actual opportunities to flex (сделать навыки более гибкими,
способность подстраиваться под новые обстоятельства) and grow your
skills at work. And actually drawing (беру) from my personal experience
(опыта) here, and the most toxic manager that I worked with had this
phenomenal (феноменальной) ability of taking a task that should have taken
30 minutes and turning it (превратить) into three weeks of work and
disorganization. And just chaos, your toxic manager is going to create a lot of
hoops (колец) for you to jump through (сделает много препятствий,
которые нужно преодолеть) a lot of checkpoints (проверок) and a lot of
really strange nine rules in order for you to actually accomplish (достичь) your
goals (цели).
Answer the questions:
1. What is this video about?
2. Has your boss ever created obstacles for you? If so, which ones?
3. What would you do if your boss created many hoops for you to jump
through?
