 to step out of his comfort zone and do what he believed God was telling him to do.
But at the time - he had to make the decision to go - to trust his heart, his Spirit, to do what he was sure God was telling him to do... wasn’t he?
And so we learn from Abram the nature of faith - the reality that God does not force us to do anything - in fact, He has established the world in such a way that we cannot be certain with our senses even of His existence. I have always thought that this is because God gains something from our choosing to follow Him. I don’t know what it is - our love, our praise, our adoration? As we are made in His image, it seems reasonable that He should feel happy and fulfilled as a result of our choosing to want to follow His way.
But this means we have to exercise faith - we have to go HIs way of our own volition, without assurance at the moment of our decision.
And Abram did this more than most...
Genesis 12 - 1-3
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;
I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
______________________________________________________________ I’ll trust you when you speak to me, and call to me to go.
I will believe the spirit’s voice, take action like it’s true.
I’ve confidence in what you say, that my story won’t stop here.
So I’ll rely on faith in you, and the whispers in my ear. The purpose of my journey has already been foretold
That you will build a nation, even though I’m very old.
My culture and my family, my heritage and my land
Must all be left to other folks, and be worked by other hands
