IMPORTANT: In approaching from the east or south you will pass over the Dartford Crossing
which is a toll bridge. You must pay the toll by midnight the day after you cross. If you fail to pay
the toll and your rental car company pays it, they will hit you for £30 admin fee. For prices click
here. For general information and to pay go to www.gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge. For
ways to beat the late payment penalty charges click here. It will tell you how, as a first time
“offender” to get an extra 14 days to pay.
As you approach Junction 27 you will want to take the M11 north. Get into and stay in the 2nd lane
out from the left. The signs on the overhead gantry say “A11 East / Colchester / Stansted”. There’s
also a sign that says “Audley End House”.
Whatever your starting point, now your choices are:
1: To go to Waltham Abbey Details on the opposite page.
2: To simply head north.
If you take this option you have a choice of three routes:
Just remain on the M11 all the way to Cambridge . . .boring! Details below.
Take a bit of a diversion to go through Finchingfield and visit Audley End
Take a longer, but much more attractive route through the Constable Country in Norfolk.
