Kettering
The Montagu Monuments (pictured). In the
picturesque village of Warkton, on the outskirts of
Kettering, you might not expect to come across a
world-class monument in a parish church. Yet at
St Edmund’s Church you will find four. Located
near Boughton House in Kettering,
Northamptonshire, you will find these four hidden
gems within this beautiful church. Dedicated to
four members of the Montagu family, the
monuments are at once beautiful works of art and
highly important pieces of Britain’s social and artistic history. Sculpted from fine marble, the
monuments were positioned in four recesses in a purpose built chancel within the church. The first
two commissions were given to Roubiliac, who was the greatest sculptor to work in eighteenth
century England.
