London To Oxford

[Return to the Heart of England Index]

You can, if you are so inclined, just rip up the M40 all the way to Oxford, and that’s not a
bad option if you are on an overnight trip and want to spend max time among the Dreaming
Spires of this world famous university city.

But otherwise, why? You are not here to compete in a motor rally.

Take the other option to visit West Wycombe Manor and Windsor Castle.

        So, there are two options:

1: Fast and direct – if you just want to get there as fast as possible. London to Oxford direct is 60
miles, about 1 hr 20 mins.

        Route 1 on the map . . .

2: The suggested itinerary is to take in West Wycombe Manor. About 46 miles, 1 1/4 hours
driving time. If, however, you start from Heathrow Airport, Windsor is sort of next suburb over and
you might consider visiting Windsor Castle, the family home of the queen.

In fact if you are starting from anywhere in the city a visit to Windsor is well worth it.

        Leaving London

Navigating out of central London is a nightmare no matter which way you are going. I really would
suggest you hire a car from one of the suburbs, rather than in the centre of the city itself.

Your route depends a bit (actually quite a lot) on where you start and where you finish. Returning a
rental car to a different location than your pick-up point can incur quite a hefty surcharge. Thus if
on your return you are to fly out it may make sense to collect the car at your departure airport –
Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted or London City.

Heathrow is definitely the easy option because it’s on the direct line of travel towards Oxford.
Gatwick isn’t too far out of the way, either. The others, not so much.
