ABSTRACT
Currently, the rapid economic development in the industrial sector and the rapid
urbanization of the construction sector today causes this sector to require high building
materials which leads to several problems such as shortage of building materials, increased
waste productivity and so on. In this study, HDPE plastic was selected as a substitute for cement
as a binder in the manufacture of drain cover. HDPE plastic is chosen because its recyclable
properties can reduce the cost of building materials and can reduce environmental pollution is
the main reason for the use of HDPE plastic in the manufacture of drain covers. The use of
HDPE plastics can be a way in reducing the source of pollution by avoiding the millions of
plastic waste that accumulates in landfills. In addition, this HDPE plastic has a high level of
durability and a high level of weather resistance. This study was conducted to test the
substitution of cement to HDPE plastic as a binder material. Common building material
components used in the manufacture of drain covers use a mixture of cement, sand and water
in a certain ratio. In this study, different percentages of plastic use were used in the manufacture
of drain cover namely 15%, 20%, 25%and 30%. Testing will be done on all plastic percentages,
the tests to be done in this study are compressive strength test, tensile strength test, flexural
strength test and impact strength test. These four tests will be tested on each specimen and the
data will be compared. Based on the results taken, the compressive strength value for the use
of HDPE plastic of 15% is 1.79 (MPa), HDPE plastic mixture of 20% is 0.89 (MPa), HDPE
plastic mixture of 25% is 5.40 (MPa) and finally, plastic mixture 30% HDPE is 3.18 (MPa).
