OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
Percentage of academic staff involved as principal investigators of research projects.
Notes:
1. Principal investigator and not number of projects.
2. A principal investigator can only be counted once, under the category of International,
Industry, National or University Grant.
3. Principal investigator is counted based on date of commencement of research and
distribution of funding.
4. In the case of a grant from multiple institutions, both institutions can lay claim as the
principal investigator provided that they have received a part of the grant.

ACTION PLAN SCHOOLS/DEPARTMENTS
INVOLVED
• Make it compulsory (monitored by Dean) for all lecturers
who are not principal investigators as at year of evaluation Research & Innovation
to submit proposals and consider it as part of the annual Management Centre and
appraisal components Schools
• Principal researcher as at year of evaluation should submit
research progress and consider it as part of the annual
appraisal components
• Centres of Excellence need to be visible through public
talks, online publications, etc.
• Organise workshops to build confidence among
researchers
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and
RIMC need to be involved in the process of promotion of
academic staff
• Set the cap for all lecturers to secure at least RM20,000
research grant
MONITORING MECHANISM
• Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) must evaluate Deans in the performance
appraisal exercise to ensure alignment with strategic planning (which combines both
academic and research agenda)
• Quarterly performance appraisal
