OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
Percentage of academic staff involved as principal investigators in industry grant research
projects.
Notes:
1. Number of principal investigators and not the number of projects.
2. A principal investigator can only be counted once under the category of International,
Industry, National or University Grant.
3. Principal investigator is counted based on date of commencement of research and
distribution of funding.
4. In the case of a grant from multiple institutions, both institutions can lay claim as the
principal investigator provided that they have received a part of the grant.
5. To be counted, the grant should meet a minimum of: 105
S&T - RM 10,000
Non-S&T - RM 5,000
ACTION PLAN SCHOOLS/DEPARTMENTS
INVOLVED
• To facilitate legal matters when engaging with industry.
• To provide exposure to researchers on techniques in
dealing with industry
• To establish co-operative experts at the School level to Research & Innovation
offer specialised consultation services - for community Management Centre and
engagement, to increase industry grants Schools
• Set the cap for all lecturers to secure at least RM20,000
research grant
• Identify lecturers who have yet to be principal
investigators and plan accordingly.
MONITORING MECHANISM
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and RIMC must be involved in the
process of promotion of academic staff
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) must evaluate Deans in performance
appraisal exercise to ensure the alignment with strategic planning (which combines both
academic and research agenda)
• Quarterly performance appraisal
