Determining a topic is the first step to write a report text.
In here is we have to decide what things that we want to
describe or explain. It is same with the explanation above, we
have to consider that the topic we chose it must in common
area. For example, if you want to create a report text about
Elephant, so we have to choose the topic or the title of the text
is Elephant commonly. It is not in specific term like Sumatera
Elephant. If we do it, the genre of text we want to discuss is
change become descriptive text. Because, the characteristics
or the difference between report text and descriptive text is
in the part of the idea itself. Thus, the determining of the
topic is essential to make our report text is interesting and
become the soul of the text that as bridge to another
procedures to make a report text.
b. Gathering the information
In gathering the idea or information you can use the mind
map. Inside the mind map you can list the idea or important
point that you want to discuss.
For example, if writing about animals. Points include:
• Habitat
• Physical characteristics
• Food
• Habits

• Etc.
c. Separate the ideas for each paragraph
From each idea that has been collected, put each idea in a
paragraph for writing. For example, writing about animals,
then:
• The first paragraph contains the habitat and physical
characteristics.
• The second paragraph writes about the food and habits of
the animal.
• The third paragraph contains how the animal defends
itself, and so on.
