KPI 2 | GENE FLOWS
This programme is still under investigation and development; however, it is recognised that gene flow will follow on
from the restoration of landscape, ecosystem and community linkages. To date, the need for artificially augmented
gene flows has not been identified as a priority and will only be highlighted by genetic research into specific
organisms that will be identified as the system restores.
Karingani, in collaboration with the Giraffe Conservation Fund, Mozambique Wildlife Alliance and ANAC are
participating in a continent wide intensive giraffe genetic sampling project analysing DNA from all species and
subspecies of giraffes across Africa. Currently, very little data on giraffe subspecies is known and this project is a large
initiative to better understand how these iconic megafauna are distributed and to better aid in their conservation.
During the reporting period, small tissue samples were collected from two individual giraffes by using specialised
biopsy darts allowing for vital DNA collection without having to immobilise the animal. The information gathered
from these biopsy samples will tell us what subspecies of giraffes reside in Karingani which will be used to inform
management decisions on future giraffe projects within Karingani.
In addition the MoU was formalised and planning is underway for Karingani to play a significant role in the ‘land-
banking’ of genetically appropriate giraffe for the repopulation of Mozambican reserves and national parks. The
expectation is to build on this relationship in 2021 and 2022 with the intent to translocate up to 200 giraffe into
Karingani.
Genetic samples are collected from giraffes via biopsy darts which collect a tissue sample for genetic testing
KPI 3 | HABITAT LINKAGES
With the removal of all human settlements within the reserve, linkages between habitats will be restored as the
insect, reptile, amphibian, bird and mammal fauna continue to restore.
