An interview with…..
Hannah Forster (AFC Fylde Women)
AFC Fylde Women have got off to a great start in FAWNL
Northern Premier Division and their 3-0 victory at
Middlesbrough on Sunday took them back to the top of the
table.
Fylde captain Hannah Forster told us of her delight with
the result against Middlesbrough and the team’s defensive
record to date, but insisted that they are remaining grounded
and not getting carried away at this early stage:
WSS: Congratulations on a great win on Sunday, do
you think that the scoreline reflected the team's
performance on the day?
HF: Thanks. Sunday was all about us bouncing back after the
disappointing result at Forest, so to go away to
Middlesbrough, score three goals and keep a clean sheet is
really positive. As a squad we have such high expectations of
ourselves, we know we need to continue to work hard to get
the performances back up to the standards we demand of each
other but I think it was important to get the right result and
we managed to do that.
WSS: With Wolves not playing, a win was going to send you back to the top of the
table, was that an extra incentive at all?
HF: It’s really early days in terms of looking at the table, we are aware of other teams that are
around us in the table but we prefer to take each game as it comes and focus on us doing the job
on the pitch.
WSS: Another clean sheet on Sunday as well, your sixth in eight matches this
season. Presumably that is a record that the defence in particular will be proud of?
HF: Yes definitely, this is something as a team we are really proud of and continue to work on to
ensure we are as organised and solid defensively as we can be. We are really fortunate to have
two brilliant keepers, as well as the luxury of options across the back line, competition for places
is really competitive and this heathy competition is definitely paying off so far.
WSS: Although she didn't score against Middlesbrough, and there have been other
regular scorers this season, how big a boost is it to have a player like Faye McCoy
whose scoring record for you since joining has been superb?
HF: It’s huge for us, Faye is such an influential player for us both on and off the field. In previous
seasons we have lacked that killer instinct in front of goal, but bringing in a player like Faye, her
goalscoring record at this level speaks for itself and its great to see her continuing that with us
both last season and this season. It’s also brilliant to see other girls chipping in with the goals,
shows the attacking threat we oppose to other teams.
WSS: This week it's a break from the league for you and a League Cup tie away to
Sheffield FC who have been picking up in recent weeks. What sort of match are you
expecting against them?
HF: Sheffield FC are a very well-respected club with some talented young players, which under
the guidance of Graham Abercrombie, are starting to shine. We expect nothing less than it to be a
really tough game with both teams trying to play in the right way, for us we continue to build on
a positive result last week and look to gain momentum in the cup that we can take back into league
action later in the month.
WSS: How big a priority is the League Cup for you this season, is that a trophy you
are targeting?
HF: We want to be competitive in every game we play this season in all competitions and the
League Cup is definitely a trophy we want to progress well in. We are fortunate enough to have a
squad of players with quality in numbers in all areas and the cup competitions could be a chance
for players who haven’t featured as much to get minutes and showcase what they can do.
