Huddersfield Town have got off to a great start in the league this
season and as we go into the enforced break, they lead the
FAWNL Northern Premier Division table by three points
following their 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion on
Sunday, their sixth victory in succession.
Huddersfield vice captain Lauren Griffiths, who
captained her side to their win on Sunday, told us she thought it
was a deserved victory against good opponents and in the long
term, that they are capable of staying amongst the leading sides
when the season gets going again:
WSS: That looked to be a tough game for you on
Sunday, did the scoreline reflect the game?
LG: I think we deserved the win and think we showed
throughout the game that we always had enough to go on and
get the three points. West Brom put up a good challenge and
took their chances well, but overall I think we showed fight and
character to dig in and get the three points.
WSS: Was it at all anxious or nervous in the late
stages when you were one goal ahead?
LG: I think we had a few nervy moments and Bethan (Davies) pulled off some good saves to
keep us ahead. But in the last ten minutes we had the chance to get another two or three
goals ourselves but just couldn’t put the ball in the net. I think had we taken one of those
chances, we would have gone on to get a few more goals to gain a bigger advantage and win
the game by a number of goals rather than a 3-2 scoreline.
WSS: Now, as we go into the enforced break, the win has given you a lead of
three points, how does it feel to be top of the table at this stage?
LG: It’s still early in the season to be thinking too far ahead. We try to prepare for each game
and how we can beat our opponents at the weekend. Psychologically it’s a good position to
be in and a good place to start when the season restarts.
WSS: After picking up one point from your first two games, you have
responded spectacularly with six wins in a row, presumably this run has given
the team an awful lot of confidence?
LG: We are feeling confident and we’ve done well to turn the results around. We knew the
wins would come, but it was a matter of patience after a slow start. I think we are still
capable of playing much better than we have in some games this season, despite the fact
we’ve got the win. We will continue to improve and grow in confidence as a team.
WSS: Huddersfield have been among the leading sides in the division in the last
few seasons but just haven’t quite been able to make a sustained challenge, do
you feel that the team is ready to go all the way this time?
LG: I think the difference this season in comparison to others is that we are grinding out
results and showing more character to get through tricky periods in games. We’ve shown
that we can withstand periods of pressure and still come away with the three points. There
have been a few games when we have conceded first and come from behind to win and we
haven’t done that in previous seasons. We know the ability we have as a squad and we have
confidence in one another as players.
