Wednesday night saw the top two meet in their re-arranged clash and it was
Bristol City who won 3-1 against London City Lionesses to bring the sides
level on points at the top.
Shania Hayles gave City the lead as half time approached, with Lily Agg
bringing the Lionesses back on terms five minutes later. Grace Clinton put the
Robins back in front just before the hour and Ffion Morgan bundled in the
third. The Lionesses stay top of the table on goal difference although the
Robins have a game in hand.
Things had looked good for the Lionesses just three days earlier as Sarah Ewens, Atlanta
Primus and Lily Agg had given them a 3-1 victory over Sunderland, who replied through
Elizabeta Ejupi, whilst Bristol City had shared a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers.
Southampton Women meanwhile ended their four match run without a win by
beating Crystal Palace 2-0, a result which keeps them in third place. Injury time proved to be
fruitful for the Saints on the day, Sophie Pharoah giving them the lead on the stroke of half time
and Ella Pusey wrapping up the win with the second late on.
Birmingham City stormed to a 4-0 victory at Lewes, which moves them up into fourth.
The Rookettes had only conceded eight times in the league prior to the game but, building on
their superb FA Cup win seven days earlier, Jade Pennock netted twice to put the
Blues in control at half time. Lucy Quinn
increased their lead midway through the second Durham Women 1 (Clarke 89)
half, before Pennock completed her hat-trick with Sheffield Utd 0
-
the final goal, three minutes from time. Charlton Athletic 1 (Hennessy 90)
There was late drama at Charlton Coventry Utd 0
Athletic where the home side made it four league -
wins on the trot with a 1-0 success against Southampton 2 (Pharoah 45, Pusey 90)
Coventry Utd. It looked as though Coventry Crystal Palace 0
were on their way towards picking up a precious -
point in their fight for survival but seven minutes Lewes 0
into injury time, Alex Hennessy popped up with Birmingham City 4 (Pennock 15,45,87, Lucy Quinn
the only goal of the game and although they did 70)
-
slip a place on goal difference, Charlton are now London City Lionesses 3 (Ewens 27, Primus 31, Agg
very firmly in the title race. 35)
Durham Women also left it late as they Sunderland 1 (Ejupi 70)
also won 1-0 against Sheffield Utd, a result -
which takes them back into mid-table. Jess Clarke Blackburn Rovers 0
scored the only goal of the game with a minute left Bristol City 0
on the clock to hand the Wildcats their first victory -
in four league matches. Bristol City 3 (Hayles 38, Clinton 58, Morgan 61)
