Moneyfields 1 Southampton Women 1
A typically hard fought local derby in the FAWNL
Division One South West ended all square with
Moneyfields and Southampton Women battling
to a 1-1 draw at Fareham Town FC.
The clubs started fourth and fifth in the table
so a close contest was expected and this was how
it turned out.
As the match unfolded, both sides scored
during brief periods of domination whilst the
majority of the contest was even with clear cut
chances at a premium. Moneys occasionally
threatened early on down the right wing with Kjm
Whitcombe finding space to cross while
Southampton had some joy attacking with early
balls to turn the home defence. Even so, there was Laura Vokes slides in to tackle Kau’Inohea Taylor
little to worry either goalkeeper until Laura Vokes (www.jamesprickett.co.uk).
hit the bar with a lofted shot from the left on 28
minutes.
This sparked a period where Southampton gained the upper hand. Shannon Albuery was
played clear by a clever first time flick on by Hope Suominen and scored past the advancing
Georgia Jenkins on 38 minutes.
Albuery nearly added a second when she turned a loose ball against the outside of a post
on 43 minutes and the visitors must have been well satisfied with the opening half.
Moneyfields returned with an increased tempo straight from the restart and pressurised
the Sirens' defence. The equaliser came on 53 minutes via Kau'Inohea Taylor's close range
finish but Whitcombe set up the chance with a free kick delivery from 30 yards which struck
the bar and caused confusion in the Southampton box.
The hosts continued to control the flow of the game for a while but Southampton
gradually regained their rhythm and had some attacks of their own. Albuery went close on 71
minutes and home keeper Jenkins was called into action several times to act as a sweeper when
through passes were aimed at Southampton attackers.
In the end, neither side could land a killer blow and the points were shared which largely
reflected the balance of the match. Moneyfields have games in hand on the teams above them
in an excellent debut season at National League level and will hope for a top three finish whilst
the Sirens are building a squad packed with higher league experience which should bring an
exciting future.
