Georgina Spraggon (Newcastle United)

Newcastle United have got off to a brilliant start in FAWNL Division One North and their 3-0
win away to Stockport County on Sunday means they head the early table, having scored 16
times in their three matches so far.
Young midfielder Georgina Spraggon has made a great impact at the club since joining
in the summer, scoring her second goal in three games in the Stockport win and she told us that
the team is proud of their good start and have ambitions to play at a higher level in the future:
WSS: That was a very good win for you on Sunday, how good a performance
was it from the team on the day?
GS: It was an excellent performance by all the girls - one to be proud of! Stockport had some
good link up play in their wide areas but our team shape made it hard for them to break
through, if they ever did Grace Donnelly was always highly focused to keep the clean sheet.
Following on from the previous 7-1 win over Alnwick, we kept clinical in front of goal to get
another three goals which gives us great confidence going into our next game vs Chorley.
WSS: Three wins, sixteen goals scored and only one conceded is a record that
speaks for itself, is that a start that you are all proud of so far?
GS: To score 16 goals in 3 games is phenomenal - it’s a start we are more than proud of but
it’s the start we wanted and more so deserve, after our brilliant pre-season. Ultimately we are
aiming to win the league and we know to do that, we needed to be on top form from the off.
WSS: Have there been many changes to the club, on and off the pitch, since you
last played competitively?
GS: This is my first season in senior football - I’ve previously been at Sunderland RTC, where
I played for seven years - so I’m pretty new to the club (it doesn’t feel like it!) I’m not the only
new addition to the team, there are several new talented girls who have signed this year too,
who each bring their own unique attributes to our game and I’m aware of the few good
players who have moved on to different places. For the short time I’ve been at the club, it
already feels like a family; everyone is together and highly supportive. The perfect
environment really!
WSS: Katie Barker and Kacie Elson have been in fantastic form in front of goal,
is that something that gives the rest of the team a lot of confidence?
GS: Absolutely - the high standards Katie and Kacie have already shown in front of goal are
massive for the team. From just celebrating on the pitch to the all round post match buzz, it
gives us the confidence that we’re doing well on the road to our ultimate goal of winning the
league.
WSS: This week you have possibly your toughest match so far against Chorley,
who have started the season well. What kind of match are you expecting against
them?
GS: It’s going to be a difficult game, they’re an experienced and physical side. It’ll be our
biggest test of the season so far - getting a positive start and those initial few goals is going
to be key. All the girls are going to need to be on top form in order to get the result we want.
WSS: Newcastle are one of five North East teams in the division this season, can
you see that giving a real competitive edge to those teams, especially when you
play each other?
GS: Derby day is one of my favourites - that desire to beat your local rivals is always so
exciting! I absolutely love the feeling of winning; especially a derby win. Having so many is
going to bring a huge competitive edge to the league, each team wanting to prove they are the
best from the North East.
