Bristol City hold onto the leadership of the Barclays Women’s Championship
despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton in front over over 3,000 at
Ashton Gate. City swept into the lead just before the half hour through a fine
strike from Ffion Morgan but a determined Saints side battled back and earned
themselves a point when Beth Lumsden equalised early in the second half.
Charlton Athletic made sure that the long trip to Sunderland was a
worthwhile one, recording a 3-2 victory which takes them into second place.
Emily Scarr’s first half goal for the home side was cancelled out on the hour by Ella Rutherford
and Emma Kelly restored Sunderland’s lead with twelve minutes remaining. Kiera Skeels
levelled matters again a minute later and as the game went into injury time, Elisha N’Dow
grabbed a goal which gives the Addicks a third win in four matches.
Also on nine points are Crystal Palace following their 3-1 success away to Blackburn
Rovers. Elise Hughes was the heroine for Palace, the Welsh International hitting a hat-trick to
spearhead the win for Dean Davenport’s side, before Saffron Jordan netted a consolation for
Rovers from the penalty spot.
Sheffield Utd are in fourth after becoming the latest team to draw with Lewes, the
teams sharing four goals at the Dripping Pan. The Rookettes raced into a two-goal lead during
the first half, thanks to an Izzy Dalton penalty and Amber-Keegan Stobbs, but found themselves
having to settle for a fourth successive draw after a second half fightback from the Blades giving
them a share of the spoils, an own goal by Ellie Mason reducing the arrears before Charlotte
Newsham netted the equaliser.
