The scheduled top of the table clash on Sunday between Bristol City and
London City Lionesses did produce a winner, however it was the
weather which resulted in a frozen pitch and a postponement.
With third placed Charlton Athletic also seeing their match
against Lewes called off, it gave Birmingham City an opportunity to
catch up ground when they played at home to Sunderland but it resulted
in a 3-1 defeat for the Blues.
Emily Scarr gave Sunderland a first half lead which was cancelled out just before the
break by Jade Pennock. The fast improving Wearsiders were not to be denied though and
Jessica Brown put them back in front ten minutes after the restart, then experienced
defender Grace McCatty sealed the points with the third goal. The win was Sunderland’s
third on the trot and lifts them away from immediate danger and just below mid-table.
Southampton Women are now the team which occupies third place after their
long journey to Durham Women ended in a goalless draw, the fifth time this season that
the Saints have shared the points.
Sheffield Utd and Blackburn Rovers meanwhile met in an important clash and
the points were also shared, finishing level at 1-1. Rovers captain Saffron Jordan put her
side in front midway through the first half with her seventh league goal of the season, but
the Blades hit back in first half injury time and Tamara Wilcock earned them a share of the
spoils and brought an end to their run of defeats.
After eleven straight defeats, and injury time heartbreak seven days earlier,
Coventry Utd broke their duck when they won
3-2 against Crystal Palace. United got off to a Durham Women 0
