The Barclays FA WSL
Brighton & Hove Albion are on top of the Barclays FA WSL for the first
time in their history after storming to a 5-0 victory away to Birmingham City
on Sunday.
Hope Powell’s side will lead the table for the next two weeks and never
looked back after Victoria Williams gave them a second minute lead, which was
doubled on half time via an Inessa Kaagman penalty. After the break, Danielle
Carter and Emma Koivisto scored in quick succession, before Kayleigh Green
rounded off a perfect day for her side with the final goal.
Arsenal built on their opening day victory over champions Chelsea
by running out 4-0 winners at Reading FC Women. Jennifer Beattie gave
the Gunners a lead which was doubled by Beth Mead on the half hour and Vivianne Miedema made
it three just two minutes later. Miedema then kept up her outstanding form with a second after the
break to complete a good week for her club.
Manchester Utd meanwhile made it two wins out of two with a 3-1 success away to
Leicester City. Ella Toone opened the scoring for Marc Skinner’s side ahead of the break and
Maria Thorisdottir made it two from a corner, early in the second half. Abbie McManus gave
Leicester hope on the hour when she pulled one back against her former club, but United wrapped
up the win midway through the second half when Martha Thomas scored her first goal for the club
since her summer move.
Tottenham Hotspur complete a quartet of clubs on maximum points with the most
eyecatching result of the day, winning 2-1 away to Manchester City. Lauren Hemp gave City a
sixth minute lead but they were unable to capitalise on their great start and on the hour, Spurs
fought back and levelled the scores via a well taken finish from Rachel Williams. With four minutes
