The first round of fixtures since the SWPL 1 table was split in two were played on Sunday and
it turned out to be a great weekend for Glasgow City as they moved themselves closer
towards the title. City were first in action on Saturday night, playing away to Hibernian and
they strengthened their position at the top with a 2-0 victory thanks to Beatriz Prades Insa.
City were further boosted on Monday as their two title rivals, Rangers and Celtic, fought
out a 1-1 draw. Brogan Hay gave Rangers a first half lead which was cancelled out in injury
time by an equaliser from Caitlin Hayes, however the match was overshadowed by events
after the final whistle. The other top half game saw Hearts win 1-0 away to Partick
Thistle, Jennifer Smith scoring the only goal of the game early in the second half as Hearts
cemented their position in fourth place.
Motherwell have opened up a lead of four points in the bottom half, following their
4-1 victory at Hamilton Academical. Tiree Burchill netted either side of half time to put
‘Well two goals ahead and after Carla Boyce increased their lead on the hour from the penalty
spot, Burchill completed her hat-trick six minutes later. Chloe Muir netted a late consolation
for the Accies, who remain in the bottom two. Becky Galbraith scored the only goal of the
game from the penalty spot, twelve minutes from time, as Spartans won 1-0 against
Dundee Utd and Aberdeen were 3-1 victors away to Glasgow Women. Bayley
Hutchison and Eilidh Shore gave the Dons a two-goal lead inside the opening twenty
minutes and after Robin Gallacher pulled a goal back for the home side early in the second
half, Hutchison made the game safe in the dying minute when she scored her second goal.
Although they were held to a 3-3 draw by Boroughmuir Thistle, Montrose’s
position at the top of SWPL 2 remains just as strong with a lead of ten points. Charlotte
Gammie scored a late equaliser from the penalty spot for Montrose, her second on
the day and Amy Shand Strath was on
