Park’s Motor Group SWPL
Rangers have taken themselves to the brink of the title following their 2-1 victory away to
Motherwell on Sunday. Whilst most of the attention was focused on the Biffa Scottish
Women’s Cup semi finals, Kirsten Reilly gave Rangers a fifth minute lead and Lizzie Arnot
made it two on the stroke of half time. Katie Rice pulled one back for Motherwell early in
the second half but Rangers came through the rest of the match unscathed and took their
lead at the top of the Park’s Motor Group SWPL 1 table to eight points. This means that
Rangers will be crowned as Champions if they avoid defeat against second placed Glasgow
City this Sunday.
Hamilton Academical meanwhile came close to a surprise win, when they drew
2-2 with fourth placed Hibernian. Amy Gallacher did give Hibs a seventh minute lead but
the Accies fought back strongly, Lauren Evans levelling the scores just after the half hour
mark and Josephine Giard putting them in front with seventeen minutes remaining. It
looked as though Hamilton were on their way to a third victory of the season but as the
game went into injury time, Michaela McAlonie salvaged a point for Hibs with a late
equaliser.
On Tuesday night, Aberdeen strengthened their chances of a top half finish when
they won 4-2 against Partick Thistle at the Balmoral Stadium. Chloe Gover gave
Aberdeen a nineteenth minute lead which was doubled by Bayley Hutchison and Gover
netted her second a few minutes later. Thistle rallied and brought themselves back into the
game, reducing the arrears to one by half time as Rachel Donaldson and Linzi Taylor pulled
goals back. Partick’s task was made harder when they were reduced to ten players after the
interval, due to Taylor Hamill being red carded, and Aberdeen went on to score a decisive
fourth goal through Bailey Collins.
In SWPL 2, Glasgow Women stepped up their promotion challenge with a 3-1 win
against Queen’s Park. Sophie McGoldrick’s first half goal for Glasgow was cancelled out
before the break by an Abbi McDonald
penalty, but two second half strikes SWPL 1 P W D L F A Pts GD
