Better times for Shanklin
After a number of seasons when the club has fallen down the women’s football pyramid,
Shanklin have had a very enjoyable campaign and this has culminated with them
winning the Hampshire County Women’s League Division One title.
Under the managership of Shannon Kilcullen and Kate Ednay, the Isle of Wight-
based side have been crowned Champions with three matches left to play.
The League winning game away at Bournemouth Sports was a huge match - after
going 1-0 down in the first half, when nerves played a part, they came out more
composed in the second half, with a much better team performance and scored two
fantastic goals (both from Gemma Woodford, one a 25-yard goal kick into the top
corner) to win the game and the league.
Some important clean sheets were kept during the season with some excellent
performances from both goalkeepers - Kirren Shaw and Ellen Bridges.
“We travel from the Isle Wight for every away game, so coming back with three
points from those games is even more rewarding. Unfortunately we have had some
teams not travel to the island this season for our home fixture against them; which is
disappointing as they only have to come over once in a season, whereas we do the
travelling for every away game. We have been awarded the points on a couple of
occasions but would rather play football - that’s what we’re here to do.”
The team is captained by Gemma Woodford, with Georgia Dye as vice captain,
whilst Gemma Woodford is also leading scorer with 12 goals to her name, whilst Chloe
Parkes and Ceri Duffield have netted 11 and 7 times respectively. Full back Katie Barron
has had a great first season in senior women’s football and at only 16 years of age, she
has shown fantastic confidence and composure in the defensive line.
Off the pitch, secretary Julie Woodhouse performs an important role as does
away game driver and linesman, Laurence Schofield and home linesman, Robbie Dye.
Shanklin squad: Ellen Bridges, Kirren Shaw, Katie Barron, Jasmine Bavington, Lucy
Berry, Bryony Burdett, Ceri Duffield, Georgina Dye, Laura Huish, Dani Morris, Chloe
Parkes, Nicola Schofield, Lucy Scholes, Chloe Seager, Charlotte Skeggs, Abi Squires,
Peggy Stagg, Angelica Tatchell, Amy Thomson, Emma Webb, Gemma Woodford.
