The Barclays FA WSL
Arsenal got back to winning ways with a 2-0 success away to
Manchester Utd, in a match which saw Vivianne Miedema achieve yet
another record. Three minutes into the second half, the Dutch striker gave
the Gunners the lead with a goal which signifies that she has scored against
every WSL side she has played against. Just before the hour mark, Arsenal
made the game safe and inflicted only a second defeat of the season on
United, when Katie McCabe netted the second from the penalty spot.
Chelsea added to Birmingham City’s woes by beating them 5-0
as they stay hard on Arsenal’s heels. The Blues had parted company with
manager Scott Booth two days earlier and found themselves a goal behind after four minutes,
Fran Kirby scoring, and Sam Kerr hit a hat-trick before half time. Kirby rounded off the scoring
with fifteen minutes remaining to complete a seventh straight league win.
Despite going down to a 2-0 defeat to Reading FC Women, Brighton & Hove
Albion hold on to third place. Natasha Dowie gave Reading a third minute lead and Emma
Harries added the second goal late on, to put the seal on a third win in four matches for the
in-form Royals.
Tottenham Hotspur were another team to suffer only their second defeat, losing 1-0
to West Ham Utd. A tight local derby match was settled with twenty minutes remaining, as
the Hammers, who are having a good season, lifted themselves into fifth position when Dagny
Brynjarsdottir scored the only goal.
A second half goal blitz carried Manchester City to a 5-0 victory over Aston Villa,
which takes them into a mid-table position. The first half was goalless but three minutes after
the restart, Caroline Weir put City in front and Manchester City 5 (Weir 48, Stanway 51, Raso 77,81,
