Whilst the size of the attendances captured most of the attention in the SWPL on the weekend,
there was plenty of significant action on the pitch in both divisions.
Glasgow City have gone top of the table for the first time this season after their 4-1 victory
away to Partick Thistle. Kinga Kozak put City ahead from the penalty spot and they added
further goals before the break through Emily Whelan and Abbi Grant, before a Chloe Warrington
own goal reduced the arrears on the stroke of half time. Beatriz Prades netted City’s fourth and
final goal early in the second half.
Top spot had been on offer for City after the Old Form derby between Rangers and Celtic
had finished in a goalless draw the day before. Celtic goalkeeper Pamela Tajonar pulled off a
string of good saves, in particular from a 30-yard strike by Nicola Docherty whilst Tessel Middag
also hit the bar, whilst a the other end, Celtic captain Caitlin Hayes was denied late on by a superb
save from Victoria Esson.
The Edinburgh derby between Hibernian and Hearts ended in a 1-1 draw in front of a
record breaking crowd at Easter Road. Emma Brownlie gave Hearts the lead just after the hour,
with Crystal Thomas pouncing to earn Hibs a share of the spoils with five minutes remaining. A
penalty shootout then took place to decide the winners of the Edinburgh Cup, which was won by
Hibernian.
Motherwell made the short trip to Hamilton Academical and continued their good
form with a 3-1 victory. Georgie Rafferty, Kaela McDonald-Nguah and Carla Boyce put
Motherwell three ahead at half time, with Tara McGonigle replying for the Accies after the break.
There was late heartbreak for Glasgow Women as they looked to break their duck away
to Spartans. Becky Galbraith put Spartans ahead midway through the second half but Robin
Gallagher brought the scores level with ten minutes left. However just two minutes later, Hannah
Jordan restored Spartans’ lead and they held on for a 2-1 victory.
