(Basingstoke won 3-1 on penalties)
Basingstoke Town progressed into the last four
of the North Hampshire Divisional FA Cup via a
penalty shootout win over visitors Andover New
Street after a well contested goalless draw at
Winklebury Football Complex.
Several area associations within
Hampshire run their own Cup competitions
alongside the traditional County Cups offering
grassroots clubs additional opportunities to lift
silverware.
The two teams play in County League
Division Two and although Basingstoke had
recently beaten New Street 6-1 in a league
encounter, this time there was literally nothing

premium.
The hosts were always looking for the early through pass for their front runners
whereas New Street went for wing play and crosses for their best moves. It was Basingstoke
who created the better chances late in the first half when Chelsea Pennock got clear of the
defence but her shot was wide on 39 minutes. Soon after, New Street keeper Shannon Rolfe
made a fine save to deny Katie Randell as Stoke finished the half strongly.
Billie Gardner nearly gave the hosts the lead soon after the break with a shot from the
edge of the area which flew just over but New Street were impressive in their play for much
of the second half. Olivia Payne was a constant threat on the left side of the pitch and forced
a fine save from home keeper Erin Davis-Donne on 54 minutes. There were also several very
well timed tackles to deny dangerous shooting positions as New Street looked the more likely
to break the deadlock.
Basingstoke rallied late on and were very close to settling the tie on 85 minutes when
Pennock hit a free kick from 20 yards which struck the base of the post before Beth Lowe
nearly turned the rebound in.
The tie went straight to penalties on 90 minutes and Davis-Donne made two fine saves
to give the home team the advantage, whilst Lowe, Shannon King and Ayala Truelove
converted successfully to secure a semi final tie for Basingstoke after a fiercely contested
match which was a credit to both clubs.
